Comments on: Airbender: The Mickey Rooney Club http://www.thepostgameshow.com/?p=1082 Tue, 21 Nov 2017 00:59:22 +0000 http://wordpress.org/?v=2.7 hourly 1 By: Halliday http://www.thepostgameshow.com/?p=1082&cpage=1#comment-7135 Halliday Fri, 09 Jul 2010 02:52:12 +0000 http://www.thepostgameshow.com/?p=1082#comment-7135 This is a great piece of writing that eloquently sums up a lot of my feelings on the adaptation of the movie, as well as the general trend to Hollywood to continually ghettoize non-caucasian characters and actors, relegating them to minor supporting roles or as background players, despite the proven commercial viablity of non-caucasian leads. It's not Shakespeare, but HAROLD AND KUMAR surprised everyone at the time and has grown to almost cult status in a very short time, only to see Kal Penn almost immediately relegated to a non-speaking role in SUPERMAN RETURNS. I'm not suggesting that he should have played Superman, but, seriously... not ONE line? Even the dude with the clown painted on the back of his head got more screen time, whereas Kal Penn made some serious bank, and DIDN'T GET TO SPEAK. John Cho's next big role was as a nearly comatose asphyxiation festishist on HOUSE... where he also had almost no lines (hopefully STAR TREK goes well for that guy). GREEN HORNET was all set to have proven box office success Steven Chow (SHAOLIN SOCCER and KUNG-FU HUSTLE) direct and star as Kato, which, given his career long obsession with Bruce Lee and the cultural significance of the GREEN HORNET in Hong Kong, seemed like it'd be a lock, but no one seems to know what happened to that deal. Which isn't to say I don't think that THE LAST AIRBENDER does not suffer from other critical problems beyond insulting, wrong-headed, casting. M. Night Shamylan was just not the right guy to adapt a light-hearted children's epic to the big screen. While there is a certain element of melancholy to AVATAR, the show was mostly optimistic, bright, and most importantly, FUN. M. Night Shamylan has nothing in his repertoire that indicates he has the ability to make that kind of movie; not to mention his consistant ball-dropping since UNBREAKABLE (some people say SIGNS, but I really find that movie to be completely bullshit). I feel like the AVATAR guys got star struck because a guy who used to be a pretty big named director sought THEM out while looking for his own HARRY POTTER (which Shamylan has openly admitted to in interviews), and handed over the keys to the kingdom without considering what kind of movie this guy would make, rather than potentially waiting around for a better deal (though NICKELODEON probably had a lot to say abut it as well). All in all, I'm just disappointed to see a property I enjoyed so immensely (AVATAR really is one of my favorite shows of all time, animated or otherwise... definitely better than BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, to speak about ball dropping), fucked up so bad, and chances are... there is not going to be another chance for anyone to do it right.
